Why was God silent for 400 years between the Old and New Testaments?

The Straight Answer

No new prophetic scripture was written down in that window, but it was not an empty stretch of time. It was preparation, not silence in the sense of nothing happening.

What Silent Actually Means

Between the last Old Testament prophetic book, traditionally Malachi, and the start of the New Testament, no new book was added to the Protestant canon. That is what people mean by the 400 silent years.

What Was Actually Happening

This same period produced a common Greek language across the known world, Roman roads connecting distant regions, and Jewish synagogues already spread throughout the Mediterranean, every one of which became a direct highway for the gospel to travel fast once Christ came. Galatians 4:4 says when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son.

Worth Knowing

Catholic and Orthodox Bibles include additional books written during this period, like 1 and 2 Maccabees, so this silent framing is specifically a Protestant canon description, not a universal one.
