Why are there so many different Bible translations?
The Straight Answer
Different translation philosophies, updated manuscript discoveries, and a changing English language all play a role.
Translation Philosophy
Some translations, like the ESV or NASB, aim for word for word accuracy as closely as possible. Others, like the NIV or NLT, aim for thought for thought readability, prioritizing how an idea reads in natural English.
New Manuscript Evidence
Discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls have given translators access to older, sometimes more reliable manuscript sources than what earlier translations like the King James Version had available.
A Changing Language
English itself keeps shifting, which is part of why newer translations keep appearing even when the underlying Hebrew and Greek text hasn't changed.
