Is salvation by faith alone, or faith plus good works?
The Straight Answer
Paul and James look like they contradict each other at first, but they're answering different questions.
What Paul Is Answering
Romans 3:28 and Ephesians 2:8 to 9 address how a person is declared right before God in the first place, which Paul says is by faith, not by works.
What James Is Answering
James 2:14 to 26 says faith without works is dead, addressing what real, living faith actually produces, not how someone is initially justified before God.
How This Usually Gets Reconciled
Most Christian traditions read these together as faith alone saves, but the faith that saves is never alone, meaning works are the evidence genuine faith produces, not the grounds it's accepted on.
