How was the Bible actually put together?
The Straight Answer
No single council invented the Bible. The process was widespread recognition over time of books already trusted and used, later formally confirmed.
The Old Testament
The Hebrew canon was largely settled within Jewish communities well before Jesus's time.
The New Testament
Churches recognized certain books as authoritative based on apostolic authorship, widespread use across many congregations, and consistency with the faith already being taught. This recognition was formally confirmed at councils like Hippo in 393 and Carthage in 397, rather than decided from scratch at that point.
